The Bikaneri School of jewel art sprung under royal patronage in the mid centuries in Rajasthan, India.
Artisans were employed by royalty to craft and innovate using new mediums. The antique, artisanal practice gave rise to jadtar or Kundan jewel art, a highly sophisticated art form. Jadau involves intricate precious stones such as rubies, diamonds, and sapphires, cut, sculpted and cast carefully in 24 Karat gold using lac and fine pure gold foils. Each jadau piece is crafted laboriously with patience and love. When the process uses uncut diamonds,
it is called Polki. The entire process of jadiya requires patience and mimics nature like the laboured unfurling of a pearl in an ocean.

Polki jewellery features real, uncut diamonds whereas Jadau involves the usage of semi-precious stones. Generally, Polki craftsmen are more skilled and charge a higher rate than Jadau artisans.
